Edited 4 months agoAlbum Revolution #8:
It's 1977, and "Quincy Jones" Career could have never been BETTER!!!! He was Producing HIT album after HIT album...Plus (and THANKFULLY), he brought to us one of the most DYNAMIC Groups in "The Brothers Johnson"....
But then something SPECIAL happened...A Novelist named "Alex Haley" Published a book about his Family, starting with the story of "Kunta Kinte", an 18th-century "Mandinka", captured as an adolescent, sold into slavery in "Africa", and transported to "North America".....It explores his life and those of his descendants in the "United States", all the way down to "Haley".....When "Haley" was approached by "ABC Television" to make a Mini-Series about the story, The Producers only wanted ONE Person to do the Movie Score...
That Person: "Mr. Quincy Jones"!!!! Hence we have the score to: "Roots (The Saga Of An American Family)"....
I have to it it....I had NO IDEA that I was even going to try to review "Roots"...I was ALWAYS intimidated by it...But, now I will challenge myself to do it...In saying that, because the Soundtrack is fixed like it is, my review will not be like the others....
I say that because, the whole first side goes hand and hand, being a complete Suite...Highlights like, "Motherland", "Roots Mural Theme" (complete with the "Q Orchestra"), "Main Title: Mama Aifambeni (Premiere Episode)" (featuring "Wattsline" and Husband and Wife team of "Caiphus Semenya" and "Letta Mbulu") makes this a VERY inviting listen, even if you are not watching the Movie....
The TRUE HIGHLIGHTS of Side One is, "Oluwa (Many Rains Ago) (African Theme)" (again featuring "Letta Mbulu" and 'Wattsline"), with its RIGHTEOUS Guitar Backdrop, "Boyhood To Manhood" with "Bill Summers" bringing some of his "Headhunter" Vibes from his "Herbie Hancock" days and "You In Americuh' Now, African" (Even though, too short for my taste), featuring "Louis Gossett, Jr." and "Q's Orchestra", putting a FANTASTIC spin at the end of Side One....
Side Two is a little different, even though it starts out like Side One...
The difference is, "What Can I Do? (Hush, Hush, Somebody's Calling My Name)" and "Oh Lord, Come By Here" featuring "The Wattsline" and Conducted and Arranged by "Gospel" Legend, "Rev. James Cleveland", "Free At Last? (The Civil War)" again featuring "Louis Gossett, Jr." and "Q's Orchestra", and the English Version of, "Many Rains Ago (Oluwa) (African Theme) again featuring "Letta Mbulu" and 'Wattsline"....
If this wasn't for the Movie, this would feel like an EXTENTION of "Gula Matari" to me...The Music that "Q" CONSTRUCTED for this FABULOUS Soundtrack speaks VOLUMES about the Book, the Movie, and about "African" and "American" History....I am pretty SURE that "Q" made it his personal MISSION for this Music to be just that SPECIAL...
And it was!!!!!!!!
