1997's Magic was the sixth studio album from guitar virtuoso Axel Rudi Pell, and the final ARP album to feature vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (Talisman, ex-Malmsteen, ex-Takara, ex-Journey and about a thousand other projects).
If you’ve heard more than a couple of other Axel Rudi Pell albums, you know he has a pretty fixed formula, and that’s definitely the case with Magic. You start off with a quickie instrumental to set the mood, knock out a fast-paced anthem or two, deliver the 10+ minute epic song (“The Clown Is Dead” in this case) and then back to the upbeat rockers. Later albums tacked on another long epic, but Magic was a bit shorter than most. Formulaic as it may be, it’s also all kinds of awesome, especially if you love the classic ‘80s heavy metal sound. Magic is wall-to-wall with blazing riffs and theatrical solos, and it’s got a melodic side that puts it in Malmsteen meets Rainbow meets Scorpions territory. Of course it doesn’t hurt that one of the best vocalists in melodic rock and metal is on board.
With Magic, the band ends the Jeff Scott Soto era in style. It’s probably the best of the albums with Soto on vocals, and is just a good, solid Axel Rudi Pell album all-around. If you're a fan of guitar-heavy melodic metal with killer vocals, you should check out what Axel Rudi Pell has to offer. This is also a great album for Jeff Scott Soto fans.
