Edited 3 years agoTyner's use of modal and quartal style harmony did not develop overnight. Honed carefully over many sessions with the likes of Coltrane, Henderson, and Shorter, he solidified his edgy, outside style incrementally. That said, it is not possible to conclude that an early Tyner album will automatically sound vanilla and a later one will have 'the magic'; he was able to shift in and out of his dual personalities to accommodate the session.
Although this is an ensemble record, laden with woodwinds (specifically soprano sax), McCoy manages to become conspicuous at the right moments. You will find enough of his modal playing and fiery single line work to derive enjoyment here. I would further describe this as a drum-forward record, with some very nice drum solo work and percussion.
Recording is clean sounding, a little weak in the bass, but otherwise nice. I prefer piano to be louder and drums to be softer in the mix, but he obviously wanted to showcase his band.
3.5 stars. Recommended.

Stunning Dulcimer work by McCoy. Credits on the album but not here. Over all another wondrous composition/arraignment by McCoy Tyner. Thank You.
